Women Claiming to be Priests Arrested While Protesting Pope

While largely drowned out by the excitement of Pope Francis' arrival in Washington DC, there were a spattering of protests in the city from several groups that wanted to send a message to the Pope Francis.

While most of these protests were peaceful and went largely unnoticed, one protest led to arrests in the streets of DC.

Several individuals were detained as they laid down in the middle of the street in order to protest the Catholic Church's policy against ordaining women as priests, claiming that the Pope "has left women out of all of his conversations and that it's time to talk."

Some of the women - who claimed to be Catholic priests - wore signs and were cheered by some spectators as they were arrested only a block away from the Cathedral where Francis was holding his prayer service.

The The civil disobedience was organized by  a group calling themselves "The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests." The group is unrecognized by the Vatican but is making an effort to advance their goals, none the less.

"Our goal is to achieve full equality for all within the Church as a matter of justice and faithfulness to the Gospel," reads a mission statement on the groups website. "The Women Priests movement advocates for a new model of inclusive priestly ministry in the church."
