A basketball game at Wisconsin Heights High School was instantly put on hold when a 14-year-old girl was impaled by a split board on the court’s floor.

The teen was attempting to play defense when she collided with an opposing player. Both players fell to the floor, but the 8th-grader unpredictably slid right in to the exposed board.

“It was three to four inches long and, in some parts of it, between a quarter and a half inch deep,” said eyewitness Perry Hibner. “We thought they were probably going to have to remove the entire board and then take the board to the hospital.”

Luckily, none of the teen’s internal organs were injured. She was taken out of the game on a stretcher and spent the night at a hospital.

Hibner said he was surprised this could happen on a court that is only 15 years old, but added he remains confident that the floor will be fixed within the next week and their planned events will go on without a hitch.

Think of this the next time you find yourself complaining about a splinter in your finger.
