WH: Russia Isn't Making a ‘Constructive Contribution’ Against ISIL, Despite Claims

During Thursday’s White House press briefing, spokesman Josh Earnest criticized Russia for failing to make “a constructive contribution” in the fight against ISIL. He also questioned President Vladimir Putin’s intentions regarding his involvement in Syria.

“Despite their claims that they’re focused on ISIL, they’re actually carrying out military operations [in Syria] where there are few if any ISIL forces operating,” said Earnest. “So it certainly calls into question that declaration.”

“If Russia is genuinely focused on fighting ISIL, then they will make the kind of constructive contribution to the 65-member, anti-ISIL coalition that the United States is leading.”

“We have put forward a strategy to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL,” he went on. “And we would welcome the constructive contribution of Russia to that effort.”
