A watchdog group is sounding the alarm that the largest Catholic healthcare system in the country is reportedly defying the church's long standing teachings by providing transgender surgeries and abortions.
According to a report published by the Lepanto Institute, Catholic watchdog organization CommonSpirit Health, a so-called “Catholic” health ministry, is providing "gender-affirming" transition surgeries, hormone therapies, giving puberty blockers to children, distributing all forms of modern contraception (including abortifacients), and performing elective abortions.
The report says that the health system “is acting directly against Catholic moral teaching in direct defiance of its Catholic identity.”
CommonSpirt is one of the largest non-profit health systems in the country, with more than 1,000 care sites and 140 hospitals across 21 states.
One of the hospitals in the network, St. Francis Memorial Hospital has a “Gender Institute” where they reportedly perform sex change surgeries.
According to the report, “Included in the list of surgical procedures provided by CommunitySpirit’s Saint Francis Memorial Hospital are facial and body reconstructive surgeries to make the individual appear to be more masculine or feminine, genital reconstruction procedures, vocal alteration surgeries, and a host of other abominations.”
Virginia Mason Fransiscan Health, another affiliate of CommonSpirit Health, has reportedly been providing elective abortions and contraception despite its claim that it does not.

According to the report:
And despite the claim on VMFH’s website regarding “Reproductive Policies” that “Virginia Mason Franciscan Health does not provide elective abortions,” its own Hospital Reproductive Services sheet for the Virginia Mason Medical Center (dated 11 May 2022) indicates that it provides medical and surgical abortions, it refers for abortions, it provides the full spectrum of contraception (even from its own pharmacy), surgical sterilization, emergency contraception even without a claim of sexual assault, and “transgender services.
The Lepanto Institute points out that providing such procedures clearly violates directives 52 and 53 of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, which state, “Catholic health institutions may not promote or condone contraceptive practices” and “Direct sterilization of either men or women, whether permanent or temporary, is not permitted in a Catholic health care institution.”
The Catholic Church teachings on abortion, contraception, and gender have been consistent for many years. No institution can call themselves Catholic - or even Christian at all, for that matter - while practicing such anti-biblical, sinful, and quite frankly evil medical procedures.
