During his third State of the Union address, President Donald Trump honored legendary conservative radio talk shot host Rush Limbaugh and surprised him by not waiting in awarding him the highest civilian honor bestowed upon a U.S. citizen, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

It had been announced earlier on Tuesday that Trump would give Limbaugh the award, but no one really knew that he would receive the award on the spot. First Lady Melania Trump, who was seated next to Limbaugh, presented the award to the radio host.

Here's a portion of Trump's announcement:

And Rush, in recognition of all that you have done for our nation, the millions of people a day that you speak to and that you inspire, and all of the incredible work that you have done for charity, I am proud to announce tonight that you will be receiving our country's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I will now ask the First Lady of the United States to present you with the honor.

Limbaugh was shocked at the honor. He's been one of the top stories around the globe following a reported diagnosis of "advanced lung cancer."
