During his first presidential town hall Tuesday, President Joe Biden said he's "not going to speak out" against the Chinese genocide against Uyghur Muslims, saying that "culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow."
“You know, Chinese leaders, If you know anything about Chinese history, it has always been, the time when China has been victimized by the outer world is when they haven't been unified at home," Biden began.
"So, the central - to vastly overstate it - the central principle of Xi Jinping is there must be a united tightly controlled China. And he uses his rationale for the things he does based on that. I point out to him, no American President can be sustained as a president if he doesn’t reflect the values of the United States," he went on.
"And so the idea - I’m not going to speak out against what he’s doing in Hong Kong, what he's doing with the Uyghurs in western mountains of China and Taiwan trying to end the one China policy by making it forceful...[Jinping] gets it. Culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow," Biden continued.

President Biden was given an excellent opportunity to condemn the Chinese government for these well-documented human rights violations, but neglected to do so. According to the U.S. State Department and human rights groups around the world, China has been detaining Uyghurs (Chinese Muslims native to the Northwest Xinjiang region) in concentration camps since 2017. Currently, those being held in these so called "re-education camps" are being forced to perform manual labor, and women are being forcibly sterilized - a practice the Chinese government recently bragged about on Twitter. Detainees held in these camps are also reportedly being starved, tortured, and sexually assaulted regularly.
Despite the Chinese president's disgusting and immoral policies, Biden doesn’t seem ready to call him an enemy and seemingly tried to make excuses for him. “Culturally there are different norms that each country and their leaders are expected to follow” is not the response the world wants to hear from the leader of the free world regarding horrible humanitarian law violations.
Even after making excuses for the communist Chinese government, Biden did suggest that there will be consequences for China’s policies - despite having already undermined his own position.
“Well, there will be repercussions for China, and he (President Xi Jinping) knows that. What I’m doing is making clear that we, in fact, are going to continue to reassert our role as spokespersons for human rights at the U.N. and other — other agencies that have an impact on their attitude," Biden said.
If Biden is as sympathetic toward China and their radical communist president as he appears, minorities in China will continue to suffer and the rest of the world could be in danger for the next four years.
