A day after President Trump appeared to defend Roy Moore’s Senate aspirations and denial of sexual assault allegations, the Washington Post decided to run a story of the President’s own allegations of sexual assault.

The article included thirteen women’s accounts of the then real-estate mogul making unwanted sexual advances toward them.

While none of the allegations have been proven true, the Post chose to publish the article in their “Fact Checker” section of the website.

The article also includes lists of professed witnesses and “contemporary corroborators” to the stories of the alleged victims. The author, Meg Kelly, seemingly sought to justify the reasoning behind including the corroborators with this statement:

This does not necessarily mean an allegation is true, but it does give journalistic organizations more confidence to report on the allegation.

Trump and his associates firmly denied each allegation and often sought to portray the accusers as attention seekers. In one case involving a three-decade-old allegation against Trump, a British onlooker to the event claimed to have seen the alleged victim being the “flirtatious” one.

The fact that the Washington Post chose to publish the story after Trump’s seemingly open support for Moore, especially given the firestorm of calls for men in the public eye to step down from their positions over allegations of sexual assault, begs a serious societal question for Americans: have we abandoned the fundamental American belief that one is innocent until proven guilty? Or should mere allegations be enough to destroy a person’s livelihood and reputation for the sake of political expediency?
