VA Gov. Snaps Photo With Willie Nelson...and Willie Nelson's Weed

By all appearances, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) just landed himself in a bit of a pickle – except this one is sure to have critics taking pot-shots at him.

As reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, McAuliffe met briefly with Willie Nelson in Nelson's trailer at a concert in Bristow, Va., and snapped a quick picture with the country icon.

The problem?

Governor McAuliffe’s picture contained an unmistakable can of Nelson’s “Willie’s Reserve” brand of weed, front and center.

While weed may be legal in Washington, D.C. and Colorado, it is definitely not legal in Virginia. According to Va. Code Ann. §§ 182.248-250, marijuana possession is a Class I misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500 for a first offense.

Once McAuliffe’s office caught wind of the controversy, spokesman Brian Coy stated that McAuliffe was not aware of what was on the table during the meet up, adding that, “[McAuliffe's] cool, but he’s not that cool.”

In a follow-up tweet to the picture, Nelson’s wife claimed that “one of them did not imbibe – guess which one!!”
