The service was attended by hundreds, including California Gov. Jerry Brown and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

De Guzman's mother and two children spoke at the ceremony, sharing heartwarming memories about him as a son, a husband, and a father. Two of his former partners on the force also spoke in his honor, sharing stories of De Guzman's unparalleled work ethic and great sense of humor.

His funeral mass took place Thursday morning at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bonita. He will be laid to rest at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in a private ceremony with family and friends.

De Guzman was fatally shot July 28 during a pedestrian stop. His partner Officer Wade Irwin was also shot and was sent to the hospital in critical condition but recovered following surgery.

The suspect is currently in custody. He was shot by Irwin’s returning fire and remains hospitalized.

The investigation is ongoing.

De Guzman was a 16-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department and a member of the Gang Suppression Unit. He was a husband and father of a son and a daughter.
