South Bend, Indiana mayor and 2020 Democratic hopeful Pete Buttigieg in an MSNBC town hall on Monday night was asked by “Hardball” host Chris Matthews to name “living Republicans” whom he “respects.”

Stumped by the question, Buttigieg replied, “Aw, I had such a great answer if it wasn't living.”

“Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt?” replied Matthews in jest.

“No, I’ve got a better one for ya,” said Buttigieg, smiling. “Wendell Wilkie.”

For those confused over who that is, like the audience was, Wendell Wilkie was a 1940 GOP presidential nominee from Indiana.

“He was from Indiana, he put country before party," Buttigieg said.

The town hall went on without Buttigieg naming one single living Republican. Go figure. The openly gay mayor has expressed his disdain for the party, President Trump, and especially Vice President Mike Pence in the past.

And he did, after all, say that if God were associated with a political party, it certainly wouldn’t be the GOP.
