The mayor of Venice in Italy has reportedly given police the orders to shoot anyone who yells “Allahu Akbar,” an Arabic phrase commonly used before Islamic terrorist attacks.

The Sun reports that while speaking at a conference, Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said, “Anyone who shouts Allahu Akbar in St. Mark’s Square can expect to be gunned down by snipers within four paces.”

The Mirror claims Brugnaro reportedly added, "A year ago I said within four paces, now within three. I will say it in Venetian: ‘Ghe Sparemo’ (We will shoot him)."

“We need to increase our security when it comes to terrorism,” Brugnaro continued. “We had four would-be terrorists arrested in Venice a few months ago who wanted to blow up the Rialto bridge.”

‘’They said they wanted to go and meet Allah so we will send them straight to Allah without having to throw them off the bridge, we will just shoot them,” he continued.

“I have never been politically correct, in fact I am politically correct and that’s why we also need a naval blockade against people coming into Italy from north Africa,” he added in later comments.

Brugnaro’s remarks were reportedly met with applause.

Business Insider UK reports the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, approached Brugnaro to shout "Allahu akbar” at him. Nardella later issued an apology on his Facebook page for offending the Muslim community.

According to a Pew Research Center survey from 2016, less than four percent of the Italian population is Muslim.
