This week the Virginia Senate voted to pass a number of the anti-gun bills that crossed over from the House.

House Bill 2 criminalizes private transfers of firearms without first paying fees. Most transfers between friends, neighbors, or fellow hunters are not exempted.

Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax cast the deciding vote on House Bill 674 to break a tie in the House. The “red-flag” bill allows for the seizure of an individual’s firearms without a hearing or other opportunity for the person to be heard in court if they are deemed an “emergency substantial risk.”

Fairfax also cast the tie-breaking vote on a measure that fines gun owners if they don’t report a lost or stolen firearm within 24 hours of discovering them missing.

Another measure limiting handgun purchases to one per month was among the measures passed by the Senate.

The legislative support for these gun measures comes despite large pro-Second Amendment rallies and a move for “Second Amendment sanctuaries” across the state.
