Unhinged Host? Colbert Won't Have Trump On His Show 'For Safety's Sake'

1.3k views

He’s finally done it! Late night talk show Stephen Colbert basically admitted that he is unhinged when it comes to President Donald Trump.

In a Thursday interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Colbert said that he wouldn’t have Trump back on his show, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” because he’s afraid that “it would be hard for me to be properly respectful of the office.”

Cooper had just asked whether Colbert would ever have Trump back on his show, and the 55-year-old celebrity activist said that for “safety’s sake” the president shouldn’t come back on.

“The quick answer would be no because it would be hard for me to be properly respectful of the office,” Colbert said, before displaying his fake tough guy card. “Because I think that he [Trump] is so disrespectful of the office that it’s very hard to perceive him as I would want to perceive a president, in terms of their status and dignity and the representation of the United States. So I think, just for safety’s sake, it wouldn’t be a good idea.”

What does Colbert mean by that? Is he intimating that he would exhibit a violent nature towards Trump because of how HE “perceives” him? That says more about Colbert than about Trump.

It would be different if Colbert, or his writers for that matter, came up with an original idea that didn’t come from the media.

You can watch the video clip of the interview below:

At one point in the video clip above, Colbert basically said that it’s his job, and the job of the people that work with him on the show, to give the audience their opinion on the news of the day.

“We have a sum sense of what the things that people are talking about, because we want to talk about what people are talking about,” Colbert told Cooper. “I’m not here to educate the audience, I’m here to, like, give our opinion. It’s like a long editorial, is what it is.”

Wrong! Colbert’s job is to entertain by bringing comedy into people’s homes before they go to sleep. If they want opinion on news stories, they can simply watch the news.

These late-night hosts, Colbert and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel in particular, seem to have forgotten that they’re supposed to be an escape from the constant beating over the head of divisive news stories that are designed to keep people uninformed and at each other’s throats.

While you may not have agreed with their politics all the time, former hosts like Johnny Carson and Jay Leno understood that their shows were supposed to make people laugh, not hate their ideological counterparts. They could make a political joke, and everyone would laugh because they didn’t intentionally try to insult people, much like Colbert does nightly.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making jokes about the president. But when that’s the majority of your “comedy,” it gets old really quickly.

Make us laugh, clowns. That’s what they’re paid to do — or, at least, that’s what they used to be paid to do.
