Why is it that it’s usually the climate change gestapo that are reported to be the biggest abusers of the environment? We’re constantly told how we suck as human beings because we don’t adhere to their every call in addressing climate change. Well, they seem to be worse at protecting the planet than the rest of us.
The Guardian reported that the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) increased their air travel in the last fiscal year by 60 percent, rising from 2,700 “domestic business flights” the previous year to 4,500 this past year, according to BEIS’ annual report.
According to The Guardian:
The department racked up the extra air miles in the same year that it asked the Committee on Climate Change to map a road towards a net zero carbon economy by 2050.
The official climate watchdog warned that there could be only a limited increase in the number of flights taken in the coming decades if the UK is to end its contribution to global heating.
The chief climate change scientist at Greenpeace, Doug Parr, said the “uptick” in BEIS air travel over the last year is “disappointing.”
“Every part of the economy needs to be making carbon reductions, and within government one would expect BEIS to take the lead.” Parr said. “The department has been cutting their flights over the last decade, but last year’s sharp and disappointing uptick in domestic flights is concerning. Flying is an unavoidably high-carbon activity and shouldn’t happen without a real need.”
As with the call for cutting air travel lacks an actual solution, like in the Green New Deal, who determines whether a flight is a “real need” or not? The government? The same government that increased their own air travel in times of “crisis” like now?
It’s almost become routine for government officials in the U.K. to practice the “champagne socialism” that a lot of them seem to really like by their continuing example of telling everyone not in the government to live one way while they continue living as if no changes are being implemented.
