President Trump’s administration is reportedly seeking to crack down on affirmative action policies that discriminate based on race, according to a document reviewed by the New York Times.

The New York Times’ Charlie Savage reports the Trump administration sent out an internal memo within the Department of Justice’s civil rights division for those interested in “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”

According to Savage’s interpretation, this means the Trump administration will be “investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants.”

However, at the same time, Savage admits the document “does not explicitly identify whom the Justice Department considers at risk of discrimination because of affirmative action admissions policies.”

Opponents of the alleged plan include Lisa Bloom, a civil rights attorney. She claimed this move was an example of Trump being a “white supremacist” since “our tax dollars will defend white rights”:

She also claimed the move to tackle race-based admission standards is reminiscent of Trump’s cabinet appointments, which she claims is “almost entirely white and male”:

Tariq Nasheed, an “anti-racism strategist,” said the Trump administration is now “targeting non-white college applicants”:

New York Daily News writer Shaun King said the push was an example of “white fragility”:

The official Women’s March Twitter account asserted “THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS REVERSE RACISM”:

While the topic of affirmative action is being described as an issue of whites versus minorities, the Students for Fair Admissions is suing universities across the country for discriminating against Asians.
