Trump press conference

President Trump held a joint press conference with Romanian president Klaus Iohannis at the White House on Friday.

He was asked, of course, to respond to his former FBI director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee about their interactions leading up to his firing.

"Why do you feel that his testimony vindicated you when it really boils down to his word or your word?" a reporter asked, referring to his Thursday morning tweet claiming "total and complete vindication."

"No collusion, no obstruction," said Trump. "He's a leaker, but we want to get back to running our great country, jobs, trade deficits we want them to disappear fast... So that's what I am focused on."

"But yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction," he continued. "That was an excuse by the Democrats who lost an election... So it was just an excuse. But we were very, very happy, and frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said. And some of the things that he said just weren't true."

President Trump also said that he would be willing to say under oath that he did not request a pledge of loyalty from Comey, nor did he ask Comey to "let go" of the FBI's Flynn probe.

"I hardly know the man. I'm not going to say, 'I want you to pledge allegiance.' Who would do that?" he asked. "It doesn't make sense. No I didn't say that, and I didn't say the other."

On his tweet suggesting that he has tapes of his conversations with Comey, Trump said that he would be "sharing about that in a very short period of time."

When pressed to give a definitive answer, Trump replied, "Oh you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer."

Comey during the Thursday hearing essentially called Trump a liar, saying that his administration “defamed” him and the FBI.

He did, however, confirm Trump's claims that he did not explicitly order Comey to end the FBI’s Russia probe or its investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn for his contacts with Russia.

Nevertheless, Comey did say that Trump asked him to “let go” of the FBI's Flynn probe, leaving the door open to interpretation. Trump has flatly denied that claim.

When asked whether he believed Trump committed obstruction of justice, Comey said it was not for him to decide.

Friday morning, Trump tweeted claiming “total and complete vindication” through Comey’s testimony. He called Comey a “leaker” for leaking to the press contents of his memos regarding their one-on-one, private conversation in the Oval Office about Flynn.

Trump's personal attorney announced after the hearing on Thursday that he plans to file a legal complaint against Comey over the leaked memos.

Romanian leader Iohannis visited Washington, D.C., on Friday to discuss defense spending and strengthening U.S.-Romanian ties.

His visit was obviously overshadowed by Washington’s obsession over the Trump-Comey saga.
