Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Monday night that he will release his tax returns when his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton releases her deleted emails.

“I will release my tax returns against my lawyer’s wishes when she releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted,” Trump said on the debate stage at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.

“As soon as she releases them, I will release my tax returns,” he promised.

Clinton later called her use of a private email server a “mistake.”

“I made a mistake using a private email, and if I had to do it over again, I would obviously do it differently,” said the former secretary of state. “But, I’m not going to make any excuses. It was a mistake and I take responsibility for that.”

Trump, disagreed, noting that her use of a private email server and subsequent maneuvering was "deliberate."

She said the American people deserve to see Trump's tax returns to know "who does he owe money to."
