President Trump at the White House on Thursday said that building the wall on the U.S-Mexico border is vital to addressing the opioid epidemic in America, which he officially declared a nationwide “public health emergency.”

“For too long, we have allowed drugs to ravage American homes, cities and towns,” he said. “We owe it to our children and to our country to do everything in our power to address this national shame and this human tragedy.”

“We must stop the flow of all types of illegal drugs into our communities,” he continued, drawing applause from the audience. “For too long, dangerous criminal cartels have been allowed to infiltrate and spread throughout our nation.”

"An astonishing 90% of the heroin in America comes from south of the border where we will be building a wall, which will greatly help in this problem,” he said.

Trump went on to say that his administration will be working with other countries “to stop these drugs where they originate.”

“We have no choice,” he said. “We have to work with others. We have to get together.”

“Whether that country is China, whether that country is in Latin America, it makes no difference. We are taking the fight directly to the criminals and places that they are producing this poison,” said Trump.

He said that the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be strengthening their inspection of packages to prevent drugs from entering or spreading throughout the country, and that he would be meeting soon with Chinese president Xi Jingping to discuss the issue of drug trafficking.

In 2015 alone, 33,091 people died from opioid overdose, 12.5 million people misused prescription opioids, and 828,000 people used heroin, according to the most recent statistics available from the Department of Health and Human Services.
