Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said during a forum hosted by NBC News Wednesday night that undocumented immigrants that seek to serve in the military and obtain legal status present a “very special circumstance.”

“The military is a very special thing,” said Trump, speaking before an audience at the carrier Intrepid in New York City. “If they plan on serving, [or] if they get in, I would absolute hold those people…”

He added that the U.S. would have to first and foremost "vet very carefully."

“But the answer is, yes, it would be a very special circumstance,” said Trump.

His Democratic rival Hillary Clinton also participated in the event in a separate interview.

The event marks the first time Clinton and Trump appeared at the same event.

The presidential hopefuls will share the stage at the first presidential debate on Sept. 26.

The debate will be hosted by NBC News at Hofstra University in Hempster, N.Y.
