President Donald Trump took to Twitter Tuesday morning to encourage the arrest of vandals who target statues on Federal property.

“I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent…This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!” Trump tweeted.

Trump’s Tuesday tweets follow a night where rioters tried to pull down a statue of former President Andrew Jackson and set up a “Black House Autonomous Zone” near the White House.

Rioters attempts at both activities were prevented by authorities.

“There will never be an ‘Autonomous Zone’ in Washington, D.C., as long as I’m your President,” Trump tweeted.

(Update: 6/23/20 4:30PM - Twitter has since flagged the Presidents tweet for violating rules on abusive behavior)
