The need to defend faith as a fundamental right was the main focus of President Donald Trump’s speech at the Value Voters Summit Friday.
“We know that it’s the family and the church that know best how to create strong and loving communities, and above all else, we know this, in America we don’t worship government, we worship God,” Trump told an applauding DC audience.
“Inspired by that conviction we are returning moral clarity to our view of the world and the many grave challenges we face.”
Trump touched upon pro-life issues, rolling back federal regulations, protecting religious liberty, and even took a dig at NFL kneelers without mentioning the football organization by name.
“We salute every American who wears the uniform, we respect our great American Flag,” Trump said to a standing ovation.
Trump also took the opportunity to take a shot at lawmakers who haven’t moved on repealing Obamacare.
“We're taking a little different route than we had hoped because getting Congress -they've forgotten what their pledges were," Trump said referring to his plan to end the illegal federal cost-sharing payments under Obamacare.
While touching upon many topics, the themes of faith and America remained constant in Trump’s address, the first a sitting president has given at the Family Research Council's Value Voters Summit.
“The American founders invoked our Creator four times in the Declaration of Independence, four times. How times have changed, but you know what? They’re changing back again - just remember that,” Trump said.
