Too little, too late.

Facebook announced on Wednesday that they will “no longer remove the claim that COVID-19 is man-made or manufactured from our apps” after more and more questions are being raised concerning the origin of the Chinese coronavirus.

According to a statement from Facebook:

In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of COVID-19 and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that COVID-19 is man-made or manufactured from our apps. We’re continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as new facts and trends emerge.

Media Research Center (MRC) Founder and President Brent Bozell took to Twitter to call out Facebook and their fact-checkers for having “actively suppressed valid debate about the origins of Covid,” while also calling on Facebook to end “their fraudulent fact-check program.”

Bozell continued in the Twitter thread saying that Facebook’s backtracking is “another reason to remove the protections Facebook and others receive from section 230.”

It’s all well and good that Facebook has reversed course and will no longer censor their users comments and posts concerning that one aspect of COVID discourse. But, the social media giant needs to answer for their overt censorship of what they like to call “misinformation.”

What good is a fact-checker if they jump the gun and label people and their comments basically as liars only for Facebook to change their tune and admit that they don’t know very much at all?
