The state of Texas will shut down all offices of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at all of its publicly funded universities, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill on Wednesday that bans DEI offices at all state funded universities. Any university that doesn’t comply with the law won’t be allowed to use the state funds distributed to it.

The law also requires state officials to conduct studies to examine the impact of the law on students broken down by race. According to the Washington Free Beacon, the studies will look at the rates of application, acceptance, matriculations, retention, graduation, and grade point averages.

"Texas is leading the nation and ensuring our campuses return to focusing on the strength of diversity and promoting a merit-based approach where individuals are judged on their qualifications, skills, and contributions," said Republican Texas state senator Brandon Creighton, who was one of the bill’s authors.

The passage of this bill comes after other states have cracked down on DEI in colleges. Florida passed a similar bill in May that prohibits state colleges and universities from spending money on DEI programs.

It also comes as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to make a decision soon about universities using race as a factor in their admissions decisions via affirmative action.
