“Tax the Rich” darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has reportedly defaulted on her own taxes, despite being…well, rich.
It turns out that the New York City congresswoman, whose cornerstone platform is taking more money from wealthy Americans and redistributing it to all her socialist pet projects, reportedly owes the IRS about $2,500 in taxes stemming from a business she briefly ran before becoming a tax-paid legislator.
KATU reports that in 2017, the state of New York issued a tax warrant in the amount of about $1,600 against Brook Avenue Press Inc., a publishing company listed on documents as being owned by AOC. (It’s now closed, by the way.)
AOC is disputing the warrant, which is supposedly why she hasn’t paid her five-year-old bill. In the meantime, she’s racked up about $500 in interest and fees.
Ocasio-Cortez's office previously told the New York Post in March 2019 that the lawmaker first learned of the tax warrant against her former business after she was sworn into Congress in January that year.
Ocasio-Cortez initially pledged to repay her delinquent corporate tax bill, but her office later said the warrant was issued "in error" and that she was contesting the matter.
Which is odd – after all, according to AOC’s own big-government platform, our overlords in D.C. know what’s best for us, and the federal agencies tasked with running our lives don’t make mistakes.
Especially when it comes to taking our money.
But apparently, the rules we’re supposed to abide by don’t apply to AOC, who, at $174,000, sits comfortably in one of the top tax brackets in the entire country, has called for a 70% top tax rate, and once sported a custom-made ballgown emblazoned with the message "Tax the Rich" to NYC's swanky Met Gala.
But if she’s asked to pay a penny more than she thinks she owes, don’t expect her to cough it up easily.
Hypocrisy’s funny like that.
