The public flogging of a Sudanese woman was caught on tape as onlookers laughed. The governor of Khartoum, Abdul Rahman Al Khedr, told the independent Blue Nile TV channel that the woman was "rightfully punished according to the sharia law, but the violation was in the manner her punishment was carried out." Authorities launched an inquiry into the video and say in this particular instance the punishable offense was 'adultery' or 'pimping'. Given Islamic law, or Sharia Law, is fully enforced in the northern region, floggings are common. Just one year ago, a woman was flogged in public for simply wearing pants. Sudan has some of the worst human rights violations in the world.

Of course, flogging is just the tip of the iceberg. The most well-known human rights violations coming out of Sudan is the genocide in Darfur.
