States with Republican governors dominate the lists of both the states with the lowest, and record-lowest, unemployment rates, according to statistics for June 2023 released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Out of the 10 states with the lowest unemployment rates last month, eight boast Republican governors, as Maryland (#5) and Maine (#8) were the only Democrat-led states to make the cut:

  1. NH 1.8% - (record low) - GOP
  2. SD 1.8% – (record low) - GOP
  3. NE 1.9% (record low) - GOP
  4. VT 1.9% (record low) – GOP
  5. MD 2.0% (record low) - DEM
  6. ND 2.0% (record low) - GOP
  7. AL 2.2% (record low) - GOP
  8. ME 2.4% (record low) - DEM
  9. MT 2.4% - GOP
  10. UT 2.4% - GOP

Record-low unemployment rates were set in each of the eight states with the lowest unemployment rates in June, six of which are governed by Republicans.

In all, record-low unemployment rates were registered in 17 states last month. Of those, 12 have Republican governors.

Likewise, six of the nine states that set record-low unemployment rates, but did not rank among the 10 lowest rates in June, have Republican governors:

  • AK 2.6% - GOP
  • MA 2.6% - DEM
  • OK 2.7% - GOP
  • MS 3.1% - GOP
  • TN 3.2% - GOP
  • WV 3.3% - GOP
  • OH 3.4% - GOP
  • PA 3.8% - DEM
  • WA 3.8% - DEM
