“As families struggle to shoulder the burden of Bidenflation, Republican-led states are creating jobs and leading the economic recovery,” the Republican National Committee (RNC) said Friday, reacting to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) “State Employment and Unemployment Summary” report for May, published earlier that day.

The Republican bragging rights claimed by the RNC in Friday’s press release include:

  • 8 of the top 10 states in terms of jobs recovered since the coronavirus pandemic began have Republican governors,
  • All top-10 states in terms of jobs recovered have Republican-controlled legislatures,
  • 13 of the 16 states with the lowest unemployment rates are led by Republican governors,
  • 11 of the 16 states that set record-low unemployment rates in May have Republican governors, and
  • 13 of the 16 states that set record-low unemployment rates in May have Republican-controlled legislatures.

In contrast, Americans appear to be fleeing Democrat-run areas, based on the latest U.S. Census Bureau findings, the RNC notes:

“The top 10 counties that saw the largest decreases in population in 2022 are all located in states led by Democrat governors, with these counties home to Democrat-run cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Detroit.”

According to the BLS, the following states all had unemployment rates under 2.5% in May:

  • Nebraska: 1.9%
  • New Hampshire: 1.9%
  • South Dakota: 1.9%
  • North Dakota: 2.1%
  • Vermont: 2.1%
  • Alabama: 2.2%
  • Montana: 2.3%
  • Utah: 2.3%
  • Maine: 2.4%
  • Maryland: 2.4%
  • Wisconsin: 2.4%
