ISIS remains one of the biggest threats to religious freedom, the Department of State found in its annual religious freedom report released on Tuesday.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in the preface of the 2016 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom said that ISIS is “clearly responsible” for genocide and crimes against humanity, and that protecting targeted religious peoples and ethnic groups “remains a human rights priority for the Trump Administration.”

“ISIS has and continues to target members of multiple religions and ethnicities for rape, kidnapping, enslavement, and death,” wrote Tillerson. “ISIS is clearly responsible for genocide against Yezidis, Christians, and Shia Muslims in areas it controlled. ISIS is also responsible for crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing directed at these same groups, and in some cases against Sunni Muslims, Kurds, and other minorities.”

“The protection of these groups – and others who are targets of violent extremism – remains a human rights priority for the Trump Administration,” he said.

The State Department details the atrocities committed by ISIS in countries such as Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Syria, which include killings, kidnappings, enslavement, and suicide bombings.

The 2016 annual report analyzes religious freedom in nearly 200 countries and details the U.S. government’s policy toward those countries.
