The Mississippi house and senate have voted to ban biological males from competing in girls’ or women’s sports in state schools and universities.

“The Fairness Act” passed the state house Wednesday and had previously passed the state senate. The measure now heads to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves who is expected to sign it into law.

Mississippi is one of more than 22 states with lawmakers proposing restrictions on playing on sport’s teams that don’t match their biological sex.

Supporters say the measure is needed to protect female sports from biological males who have an unfair physiological advantage.

This issue came to the forefront after Joe Biden signed an executive order allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.

In other transgender related legislation, the Alabama state senate recently voted to make giving children puberty-blockers, hormone therapy, or gender reassignment surgery a felony.

Lawmakers note that the state also bans minors from other substances, like alcohol and tobacco.
