A San Diego gay man who claimed he was attacked and burned in an alleged hate crime is now accused of assaulting a pregnant woman, who may have defended herself with fire.

Scott Rowin, who is gay, told authorities he was set on fire in a targeted attack by people calling him anti-gay slurs.

However investigators now say they received a call that same night of a man attacking a pregnant woman. The woman was found bleeding and had multiple injuries. Authorities say she retaliated using fire as a weapon.

About an hour later, officers received a report of a man claiming he had been set on fire. Officers determined the man with the burn injuries was the suspect in the attack on the pregnant woman.

The incident was allegedly caught on video but hasn't been released.

According to ABC7 Los Angeles:

"This is a complex investigation, and detectives are examining all aspects and allegations," police told KGTV. "The San Diego Police Department takes all crimes of violence extremely seriously. We recognize the community's interest in this case and are working to balance transparency with protecting the active criminal investigations."

Robin initially described the attack as a hate crime, even telling ABC 10 News:

“This is absolutely a hate crime. The slurs were hate-filled,” said Rowin.

As the stream of slurs replays in his mind, Rowin is keenly aware of the upcoming Pride events.

“Nobody walks around with flammable liquid like without an agenda. In my opinion, they were obliviously out there targeting the LGBT community," said Rowin.

As of yet, no arrests have been made.

While the incident is still under investigation, it does remind some of Jussie Smollett's most famous acting performance.
