The toddler snatched by a gator at a Disney resort in Florida is believed to be dead as a search by local authorities continues.

It has been more than 18 hours since the two-year-old boy was taken into the water.

“It certainly is not survivable at this point for him to have been submerged for this period of time,” said Sheriff Jerry Demings of Orange County, Fla., at a news conference on Wednesday. “This is a recovery effort at this point.”

“Our ultimate goal is to try to bring some closure to the family by recovering their loved one,” he said.

The attack occurred around 9:15 p.m. ET Tuesday night at a lake at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Personnel from the sheriff’s department, the wildlife commission, and Disney are actively searching for the child.

Sheriff Demings said the search will continue until the body is found.
