Time and time again people have been killed, raped, or robbed by illegal aliens who were able to stay within U.S. borders because of reckless so-called sanctuary city policies. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) wants to bring justice for the victims and their families.
Dubbed the "Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act," a bill introduced by Tillis and his colleagues on Tuesday would allow individuals to sue sanctuary cities for compensation if they were victimized by illegal aliens that were able to stay in the country due to sanctuary policies.
In a press release, Tillis calls the issue "disturbing":
It’s disturbing to see sheriffs across North Carolina establish sanctuary jurisdictions, releasing dangerous individuals back into communities while refusing to notify federal immigration officials. If politicians want to prioritize reckless sanctuary policies over public safety, they should also be willing to provide just compensation for the victims. The Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act is commonsense legislation that will enhance public safety and hold sanctuary jurisdictions accountable for their refusal to cooperate with federal law enforcement.
Another key aspect of the legislation is that these localities that have sanctuary policies would have to accept these lawsuits if they are to receive any Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and certain Economic Development Administration grants.
The bill has many co-sponsors including Ted Cruz (R-TX), Linsey Graham (R-SC), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
