During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) called on lawmakers to not be concerned with unborn babies, but to focus on those “here already.”

On Tuesday, Hirono argued that states have gone “on a binge of passing oppressive abortion laws like Georgia’s” (heartbeat bill that would prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy) shortly after Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.

“I hope that supporters of the bills we are talking about today, both in the states and in Congress, turn their efforts to improving the lives of the children who are very much here already and are so poorly served by the Trump administration and it’s policies,” she said.

Among Hirono’s suggestion was for lawmakers to focus on “not supporting polices that leave guns in the hands of future school shooters and policies that force children into cages at the border.”
