Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) is calling on the State Department to determine whether Russia “is, in fact, a state sponsor of terror.”

In an appearance on Fox News’ “Outnumbered Overtime” on Tuesday, Gardner said that sanctions are not enough to punish “a Russia very much complicit in the attack that Bashar al-Assad carried out with these chemical agents against his own people.”

Gardner said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “understands strength and he capitalizes on weakness, and what the United States needs to do right now is show strength.”

That’s why, he said, he’s introducing legislation that would require the State Department to determine within 90 days whether Russia should be added to its State Sponsors of Terrorism list.

"I believe the State Department should make a determination of whether or not Russia is, in fact, a state sponsor of terror," said Gardner.

He added that Russia “should be held accountable” for a variety of offenses, including the poisoning of a former Russian spy in the U.K., its military involvement in Ukraine that has resulted in mounting civilian deaths, and efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Gardner's remarks come after the U.S., France, and Britain launched air strikes on Syria over the weekend in retaliation for the Assad regime’s chemical weapons attack on its own people.

Trump following the attack publicly criticized Putin for backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
