During a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Thursday, California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said that China is “growing into a respectable nation” and claimed that holding China accountable for the coronavirus would be a “huge mistake”.

“We hold China as a potential trading partner, as a country that has pulled tens of millions of people out of poverty in a short period of time, and as a country growing into a respectable nation amongst other nations,” Feinstein said, “I deeply believe that.”

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Feinstein said eliminating foreign sovereign immunity from China to legally hold them accountable for the transmission of the coronavirus would allow China to do the same to the United States.

The committee meeting discussed a bill that would allow people to sue the Chinese government for its mismanagement and misleading reporting of the coronavirus pandemic.

Feinstein’s comments come after leaked drone footage from Northern China allegedly shows Uighur Muslims being bound and blindfolded and loaded onto trains. During an interview with BBC host Andrew Marr, the Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming offered no explanation for the footage.

The Trump administration has increasingly grown aggressive in its relationship with China with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo considering a ban on a popular, Chinese-based social media platform that is allegedly being used by the Chinese Communist Party to funnel private user data.

The Washington Free Beacon also reported that Feinstein has personally benefited from a relationship with China. Feinstein pushed for greater trade relations because her husband's company planned to partner with businesses in China.

Of course there is also that issue of the Chinese spy that managed to stay by Feinstein’s side for nearly 20 years.
