Shortly after the socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) praised Pope Francis for his views on “greed” and “the worship of money,” the senator participated in a prayer rally for a $15 minimum wage for federal contract workers.

In a tweet sent out this morning, Sanders thanked Pope Francis for “forcefully” reminding the public “that greed, and the worship of money, is not what human existence should be about”:

Later in the day, Sanders participated in an alleged “prayer action” organized by Good Jobs Nation to advocate for a $15 minimum wage for federal contract workers. Good Jobs Nation used the visit by the the pope to push for economic reform:

Sanders told the audience of striking workers, “There is no justice in America when the largest low-wage employer is not McDonalds, it is not Burger King, it is not Walmart. It is the United States government.”

Sanders also tweeted that he welcomes Pope Francis to the United States and that “it is important for all of us to understand fully his call for social and economic justice”:
