According to the Guttmacher Institute, 29,800 abortions were provided in Maryland in 2017. It seems clear that for some Baltimore officials, that number is not high enough and more needs to be done to make it increase.

On Monday, the Baltimore City Council unanimously approved a resolution to create a $3.5 million fund for local abortions.

The local news media refer to this measure as making Baltimore a “sanctuary city” for abortion.

The resolution calls on Governor Larry Hogan to release $3.5 million to expand abortion services and train non-physicians to perform abortions in the city.

The move is over concern that the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade and let states decide how they will handle the abortion issue.

Portia Pinder of the Baltimore Abortion Fund says she expects their call volume to increase 60 to 100 percent if Roe is overturned.
