A kidnapping was foiled in San Diego when a man’s truck didn’t start.

According to Fox News, a six-year-old boy left a family gathering Tuesday night in a suburb of San Diego, and was waiting for his parents outside when the 52-year-old suspect grabbed him from behind. The man, who has been identified as Michael Mahurin, then placed the boy in the front seat of his truck and told him to lay down and keep quiet.

When Mahurin’s truck didn’t start, he actually asked the neighbors for some a jump-start. That’s about when the boy’s family saw he was missing and started to look for him.

Suspicious, the boy's father walked up to Mahurin’s truck and shined his light inside, where he discovered his son in the front seat.

Family members then called the police and detained the suspect until the cops arrived and arrested him.

David Khammel, the boy’s uncle, said the suspect claimed, “I didn’t put him there,” and “I didn’t know he was in there” when asked about the boy in his car.

Mahurin was admitted to San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment, illegal possession of a controlled substance, and driving without a valid license. He’s being held on a $105,000 bail pending arraignment, according to Fox 5 News.

Omar Ligon, a neighbor, said he was astonished to hear about the incident.

“It’s pretty scary, pretty scary to know that kids are outside by themselves sometimes,” Ligon said. “We’ve really never had an incident like this in this neighborhood, so it’s pretty new and pretty scary, and pretty alarming.”
