A volunteer who was canvassing neighborhoods in support of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was violently beaten by four assailants over the weekend in an attack so brutal it reportedly left him with a broken jaw and in need of facial reconstructive surgery.

According to local reports, 27-year-old Christopher Monzon, who was wearing a Rubio shirt and a hat sporting a Gov. Ron DeSantis campaign logo at the time of the attack, was canvassing E. 60th St. Sunday just before 7 p.m. when he was approached by a group of at least three people who told him to stop passing out fliers. He was then reportedly followed before being assaulted.

Police have arrested 22-year-old Javier Jesus Lopez and charged him with aggravated battery in connection with the incident. Authorities say they're still looking for two others who may have been involved, adding that so far there appears to be "no indication" of a political motive...behind a targeted attack on.a man wearing GOP gear and passing out campaign information.

"Mr. Lopez told the victim he was not allowed to walk on the sidewalk and pass out fliers in his neighborhood," police said in a statement. "The victim, in order to avoid the confrontation walked across the street where he was again confronted by Mr. Lopez. During the verbal dispute, Mr. Lopez then struck the victim multiple times in the face and head causing the injuries."

While police haven't been very forthcoming with details of the attack beyond confirming the one arrest, Rubio tweeted photos of a bloody Monzon being treated at the scene, and another seeming to show the man lying unconscious in a hospital bed.

"Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood in #Hialeah #Florida," the Republican senator tweeted.

"He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery," Rubio added.

True to form, the story hasn't made it far past local headlines.
