Rolling Stone has reportedly agreed to pay $1.65 million to settle a defamation suit brought by the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity after the magazine alleged fraternity members raped a girl as part of a hazing ritual.

In the now-debunked 2014 “A Rape On Campus” story, Rolling Stone’s Sabrina Rubin Erdely wrote that seven members of the University of Virginia fraternity raped a girl named “Jackie.”

As it turns out, none of the story was true, and it was merely an attempt by “Jackie” to gain the sympathy of her crush.

According to the Washington Post, Phi Kappa Psi agreed to settle their defamation case against Rolling Stone for $1.65 million, which is less than the $25 million the fraternity originally requested.

In a statement, the fraternity said a “a significant portion of its settlement proceeds” will go toward “organizations that provide sexual assault awareness education, prevention training and victim counseling services on college campuses.”

The settlement with Phi Kappa Psi comes after a jury awarded former University of Virginia Associate Dean Nicole Eramo $3 million in a defamation suit, after Erdely portrayed Eramo as callous and unconcerned about the needs of her students.
