During the pre-show at last week's Media Research Center 35th Anniversary Gala in Washington D.C., former senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was gracious enough to spend a few minutes talking with MRCTV about the Gala itself, the conservative movement and the direction he feels it's headed.

Here's some of what Santorum said:

I think we’re in a transition period, and I think it’s a very welcome transition period. I think we’re recognizing several things — number one, that the culture matters, and that the big changes that we’ve seen in the culture that conservatives have ignored for a long, long time are now becoming more front-and-center issues. And things that are fundamental to being able to live in a free and safe and prosperous society.

And secondly, that the conservative movement has changed from what used to be a movement that was driven by intellectuals and suburbanites to a much more blue-collar movement, a much more populist movement, which I know some people are nervous about. But, the interesting thing is that the reason its become populist is because of the culture, and the elite culture has so dramatically changed. And good, hard-working Americans still love America for what they knew it I, and they still love traditional values. So, in a sense, the movement has shifted to where the center of the movement is, which is in working men and women.
