Authorities have reportedly identified the man who killed 33-year-old Newman Police Officer Ronil Singh during a traffic stop on Christmas Day as an illegal alien living unlawfully in the United States.
Though law enforcement declined to provide many further details, local outlet KRON4 is reporting Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said Thursday that the suspect who left Singh for dead was a Hispanic man who was in the country illegally.
Singh was reportedly heard calling out “shots fired” over the radio during a traffic stop as part of a DUI investigation in Newman, California on Wednesday, and was found at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Surveillance footage captured a heavyset Hispanic man leaving the scene in a silver or gray extended-cab Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. Police say they're still on the lookout for the shooter, who they've declined to identify by name.
Singh, a Fiji native, leaves behind his wife, Anamika, and their five-month-old son.
