Rep. John Conyers To Retire From Congress, Let Relatives Run For His Seat

1.8k views

After 52 years in the U.S. Congress, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) announced his retirement on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

In an attempt to keep the ol’ Conyers Family tradition going, Rep. Conyers’ great-nephew, Ian Conyers, 29, plans to run for his district seat

Ian Conyers currently serves as a State Senator for Michigan’s 4th District. However, according to the Detroit Free Press, Conyers announced his support for John Conyers III, his son. This means the race could be between Conyer's son and his great-nephew.

“I’m absolutely going to file for his seat. The work of our congressional district, where I come out of, has to continue. We have got to have someone who has depth and experience but also historical understanding of what it takes to fight this type of evil in Washington,” the great-nephew told the New York Times.

The younger Ian Conyers also sought to clarify that the “dean” of the House was not resigning from his seat, lest anyone get the funny idea that he might have done something wrong.

“He is not resigning. He is going to retire. His doctor advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him just in terms of his health,” little Ian Conyers said, referring to the fact that Conyers recently checked himself into the hospital, citing stress over dealing with allegations of sexaul assault filed against him.

Little Conyers also attributed his his take on the sexual allegations against his relative:

I stand with my uncle in terms of his belief of no specific wrongdoing. However, those things need to have their day in court

It seems like Ian Conyers is sold out to the family business, going so far as to retweet a Twitter user who is also sold out to his family’s cause.
