On Friday, former ICE Director Tom Homan testified before the House Oversight Committee to discuss the crisis at the border and the alleged inhumane treatment of migrants detained in American border facilities.

Of course, the hearing wasn’t without its fair share of spectacles. In moves that some are describing as political theater, various House Democrats attempted to catch Homan in ceaseless gotcha statements.

One such attempt was made by Rep. Jesus Garcia (D-IL), who attempted to paint Homan as a racist who doesn't care about children:

“Do you have children?" Garcia asked Homan. "How can you possibly allow this to happen under your watch? Do you not care? Is it because these children don’t look like children that are around you?... Have you ever held a deceased child in your arms?”

"First of all, your comments are disgusting," Homan replied, "and yes I have held a five-year-old boy in my arms and said a prayer for him knowing what his last 30 minutes was like. And I had a five-year-old son at the time."

"For you to sit there and insult my integrity and my love for my country and for children ... that's why this whole thing needs to be fixed," he continued. "And you're the member of Congress. Fix it."

“No one in this room has seen what I’ve seen in my 34-year career…” Homan said after order was restored. “If you wanna legalize illegal immigration, good luck with that, because it’s gonna get a hell of a lot worse on that border."

On Monday, Homan appeared on Fox and Friends, saying Garcia’s comments “broke” him:

I thought about getting up and throwing that man a beating right in the middle of the room because when you tell someone who has spent their career saving lives that I don't care about dying children and I'm a racist, that's where I broke.
