Rep. Ilhan Omar spoke to members of the Minnesota People of Color and Indigenous Caucus on Thursday, calling for the “dismantling” of the U.S. economy and political system because it perpetuates inequality.

“As long as our economy and political systems prioritize profit without considering who is profiting, who is being shut out, we will perpetuate this inequality,” the Democratic representative from Minnesota said, “We cannot stop at [the] criminal justice system. We must begin the work of dismantling the whole system of oppression wherever we find it.”

According to the Daily Caller, Omar held the event to address "racism in policing" after the death of George Floyd. Omar has joined other Democrat lawmakers in the state to support the initiative to defund the police. The Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to eliminate the police department in June.

Omar said she supported the move because she believes the Minneapolis Police Department could not be salvaged with reform.

“You can’t really reform a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild,” Omar said.
