Border agents are apprehending record numbers of illegal aliens at the Southwest U.S. border, even as President Trump goes head-to-head with Democrats over funding for a border wall amid a partial government shutdown.

USA Today reports U.S. Customs and Border Protection caught a record 27,518 members of illegal alien family units coming across the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully in the month of December alone, surpassing previous monthly records.

Border Patrol agents apprehended 27,518 members of family units in December, the highest monthly total on record. That figure has steadily been climbing now for five months, even as Trump made stopping migrant caravans the centerpiece of his midterm election strategy and drove Washington into a partial government shutdownover funding for his border wall.

The report adds that for the third straight month, more than 60,000 total illegal aliens – including family members, unaccompanied children and single adults – were caught coming across the border in December.

Despite the increasing wave of illegal migration pouring across our open southern border, Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have continued to maintain that Trump is “manufacturing a crisis” to push for building the physical border wall he campaigned on heading into the 2016 election.

“This president just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration,” Schumer claimed during a rebuttal to Trump’s presidential address Tuesday night.
