Sen. Paul Says Trump Impeachment Is ‘Partisan Farce’ With ‘Zero Chance of Conviction’

In an interview with Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday”, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) expressed his thoughts on former President Trump’s impeachment trial calling it a “partisan farce”.

Paul then added that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer should also be impeached if the same standards were applied to the senator. Paul stated, 

"If we're going to criminalize speech, and somehow impeach everybody who says, 'Go fight to hear your voices heard,' I mean really we ought to impeach Chuck Schumer then."

Senator Paul was referring to a pro-abortion rally in March 2020 in which Schumer seemingly threatened two of the justices when he stated, "I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won't know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions." The rally took place in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments for an abortion case that democrats thought could overturn Roe v. Wade. 

 

 

 

Chief Justice John Roberts was quick to condemn Schumer’s behavior, he said in a statement,  

"Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous,"

In his interview on Fox, Paul addressed Schumer’s past behavior and the chief justice’s response, "This inflammatory wording, this violent rhetoric of Chuck Schumer was so bad that the chief justice, who rarely says anything publicly, immediately said this kind of language is dangerous as a mob tried to invade the Supreme Court."

Paul also addressed the fact that Chief Justice Roberts would not be presiding over Trump’s impeachment trial allegedly because, "Justice Roberts said heck no, I'm not coming across the street because you're not impeaching the president. This was a strong signal to all of us that this was going to be a partisan hearing with a Democrat in the chair, who's already voted for impeachment."

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is expected to preside over the trial.

When asked what the likelihood of Trump’s conviction is, Paul responded with a quick “zero chance of conviction” he also added that he hopes the trial does not take longer than a couple of days because he believes it is detrimental to the country.

The Senate is expected to convene for trial on Tuesday.
