“Queer disabled femme writer” Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha may be onto something in an interview for Jezebel on her/their new book. She/they believe(s) that in the future the majority of people will be disabled due to climate change.

“Disability” is an umbrella term for limiting physical or mental conditions. The fear-mongering of climate change likely will cause mental disability as it increasingly leads to mass hysteria.

But there are other aspects of this piece that are more confusing. For example, in the book titled The Future Is Disabled, Piepzna-Samarasinha writes that disabled people will be a “source of possibility and power” for everyone.

Jezebel’s Rodlyn-mae Banting writes that the book that “dares disabled folks to exist outside the bounds set by our ableist society by using disability justice to survive and combat ‘climate change, the rise of white fascism and white supremacy, and unending pandemics.’”

Huh? Is Banting saying disabled people are woke superheroes who will solve all of society’s issues?

Not only are disabled people social just warriors, but they are also master virologists. Piepzna-Samarasinha claims “It was disabled people who first understood that viral load [...] is a factor in whether one might get covid.” Really?

Because “disabled” can include so many ailments including immunity issues, the piece boasts that immunocompromised people wore masks to stay safe way before COVID-19. Even crazier, the piece alleges discrimination, asserting that, “The general able-bodied public still felt largely resistant to these practices, especially knowing that they came from disabled people.” (No, it was knowing that they came from prower-drunk bureaucrats and politicians.)

Lastly, Piepzna-Samarasinha is an advocate of “pleasure activism” and places “a huge emphasis on how nurturing their disabled QTBIPOC (Queer Trans Black Indigenous People of Color) community has been key to not only their survival, but their overall wellbeing.”

This sentence is, well, gobbledygook. But this is the woke left.

This piece reflects such a strange dystopian sentiment. The left wants to normalize the abnormal and takes what might be good intentions too far. Disabled people deserve to have the best lives possible and society should help ensure that, but it should be safe to acknowledge that being disabled is not ideal. If we can prevent disability from becoming the majority through better mental and physical health practices, we should.
