In a statement that ran contrary to claims made by a local anti-Trump politician, Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló praised the Trump administration for its relief efforts on the island, saying that despite popular rumor, the federal government is meeting Puerto Rico's requests for assistance.

"We need to do a lot more in order for us to get out of the emergency. But the other thing that's also true is the administration has answered and has complied with our petitions in an expedited manner," Rosselló said.

Although much of Puerto Rico remains in ruins while its residents struggle without basic necessities, the governor continuously acknowledged that his main focus was helping his people rather than wading into political banter.

But others, not so much.

On Saturday, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz accused the Trump administration of "killing" Puerto Ricans devastated by a series of recent hurricanes due to the government's "inefficiency and the bureaucracy."

While Rosselló disagreed with his San Juan colleague softly, President Trump took time to fire back hard at Cruz, tweeting over the weekend:

Trump on some Puerto Rican Leaders

Vice President Mike Pence added Cruz hasn't spent much time observing the U.S. federal relief efforts she's spent so much time criticizing, saying, "[W]hile our joint field operation at the convention center in San Juan has more than 1,000 personnel working out in a football field environment, the mayor of San Juan has only visited our joint field operation once."
