EXCLUSIVE: Public Interest Research Group to Hold ‘Check Your Privilege’ Event at University

The Minnesota Public Interest Research Group at the University of Minnesota, Duluth is inviting you to learn how to “check your privilege” so you can “use your privilege.”

A Facebook event for the MPIRG “Check your privilege” event states, “UMD’s own Cedar LR will be leading a training on how to be a better ally to all communities, especially the communities we work with most often in the Multicultural Center.”

“During this training, you'll learn how to check your privilege, and how to use your privilege to be the best ally you can be!”

Therefore, people will be taught to “check their privilege,” but then to simultaneously “use their privilege” (which is something that has to be “checked”) in order to promote social justice causes.

A photo advertising the event asks, “What boxes could you check?” and then suggests people check their “White privilege,” “Cisgender privilege,” or “Socioeconomic privilege.”

Previous events held by MPIRG at UMD include “BDSM, Kink, & Consent,” a talk by “Men as Peacemakers,” and a viewing of controversial and misleadingThe Hunting Ground.”

The Facebook page for MPIRG at UMD has made posts in solidarity with student walk-outs over “#JusticeForJamar,” a post calling for a “#StudentBlackout” to show support for Mizzou activists, and has linked to an article titled, “Student Activism is Serious Business.”

MPIRG is described as a “grassroots, nonpartisan, nonprofit, student-directed organization that empowers and trains students and engages the community to take collective action in the public interest throughout the state of Minnesota.”

MPIRG claims to have “accomplished” matters is relation to corporate accountability, democracy, and environmental justice.

The MPIRG UMD group allegedly has “task forces” dedicated to democracy, “environomics,” and “Social Justice (With a focus on Gender Justice, Racial Justice, and Corporate Accountability).”

The alleged leader of the “check your privilege” event, Cedar LR, claims to “speak for the trees.”

The “check your privilege” event is scheduled to take place on Dec. 3.
